The Subway is Out to Get Me

So today I had an epic train ride to flushing, which is normally a 45 min train ride away. It's memorial day, but I forgot (HA! How ironic) so the trains and buses are running on a weekend schedule. I took 1 1/2 hours to reach Flushing and made poor Wankyu wait for me for 3o min. Sometimes I forget why I hate to love the NYC subway system. Sure, it gets you to a lot of places, but it's hella inefficient and NEVER on time ESPECIALLY on the weekends/holidays.

But! We had a nice lunch. :)

So we went to a small korean snack restaurant on union street in Flushing. I forgot to look at the name, but I will check the next time I go back there. I have to say, this place makes some amazing kim bap 김밥.
불고기김밥

Filled with spicy beef, egg, carrots, some type of veggies, and sweet and sour pickled daikon radish, the bulgolgi kim bap makes my mouth water every time I think about it. It's made on the spot when you order so it's also really fresh and warm when you get it. It's perfect for on-the-go occasions. On top of that, this restaurant has really good Kimchi fried rice (Kimchi Bokeumbap 김치 복음밥) I didn't order it today, so I will blog about it next time.

Today, I tried the spicy squid and vegetable stir fry, otherwise known as nakji bokkeum 낙지볶음. I was halfway through my meal when I realized I was supposed to take a picture of it before I started. I apologize in advance, but it looked a lot better before I started digging into it.
낙지볶음

This wasn't as good as the kimchi fried rice, mainly because the squid was overcooked and kind of tough to chew, but it was very flavorful nonetheless. Also, this dish has a real kick to it, so it's not for the faint of heart. I'm pretty sure I drank three glasses of water by this point, and I was only halfway done with it...

Then Wankyu and I went to get Taiwanese Ice, which is one of my favorite desserts in the entire world, in the Flushing Mall food court. He got the Strawberry Ice and then got me the special Taiwanese Ice. (Thank you! Best birthday present ever!! :D)

Strawberry Taiwanese Ice
Strawberry Ice Cream, Sweet Condensed Milk, Some sort of strawberry jam topping...

"Special" Taiwanese Ice (Without the peanuts)
Jelly, red bean, green bean, mung bean and sweet condensed milk

Taiwanese Ice is a perfect treat for a really hot day. Also, there's just something about sweet condensed milk that makes it taste AMAZING with shaved ice. I know, it sounds kind of weird, but it's delicious. :d

Ísland er dásamlegt land!

Oh my gosh. I was just going through Foreignpolicy and I found this amazing song by the Best Party in Iceland, formed by John Gnarr. He's running for mayor of Reykjavik and I have to say, if I lived in Iceland, I would totally vote for him. Who wouldn't want polar bears? Disneyland in their airports?! No debt? Drug free parliament by 2020? SANTA? I'M SOLD!

P.S. He's leading in the polls. BEST BEST BEST!!

Musings of a Glutton

Hello all!

It's been a while since I've posted. I've decided to make this blog permanently into my food blog. If there is one thing I love most in the world, it's food. So this summer, I decided to take advantage of this beautiful city I live in, New York City, and explore.

Today I went to this Israeli restaurant called Hoosmoos Asli near the 6 train Spring Street stop. It's cheap, and very tasty.

Freshly Made Iced Mint Tea
Perfect for the ridiculous heat yesterday. =]

Tyler's Moroccan Hoosmoos and my Jerusalem Mixed Grill Sandwich
Both were spicy and delicious. At first, we were apprehensive about how full we would be from ordering so little. Turns out, both the hoosmoos and pita sandwich were VERY filling. Very good restaurant. The only problem I had was with the plentiful tomatoes I got with my sandwich. Nevertheless, I'd definitely go back. =]

Today, I went to meet Johnny, Viv, Lee (T_T SORRY I LUV U), Anya, Sarah, and Cece. For lunch, we had Japanese food! I wasn't particularly hungry so I settled for a grilled tuna onigiri and seaweed onigiri.

Grilled Tuna and Seaweed Onigiri
Not sure why I picked the seaweed onigiri, but the grilled tuna with mayo was delicious!! The packaging was kind of funny, and it took me a while to figure out how to roll the rice in the seaweed sheet because the instructions were in JAPANESE. My wifey helped me, and wa-la! Onigiri! It was very good! Don't know what the address of this place was, but it was on a street close to the NY Public Library. I think the street is called Library Way.

We then went to Alice's Tea Cup, a tea shop that emulated Alice in Wonderland. IT WAS SO CUTE and the scones were SO GOOD!! It's a little bit girly, but that's okay. Everyone can join the tea party! :]
Peach and Flower Tea
Mmm...very fruity. I liked it a lot.

My Chocolate Coconut Scone and Ham and Cheese Scone
OMG. These SCONES WERE DELICIOUS. They were warm and fluffy and very filling. I never wanted to stop eating. And I have to say, clotted cream and jam on the Chocolate Coconut scone makes it even better!

I think Johnny agreed with me. He had four helpings of clotted cream and jam. He's so lucky he doesn't gain any weight from eating...

Woopsie Daisies

It's SPRING!!! HOORAY!! (this post came late)

First of all, Happy April Fool's Day! Did anyone notice that youtube is upside down? It's pretty funny, I love it.

So lovely Zarek has reminded me that I haven't posted in forever. I guess I'm not really used to posting often because I've never had to do something like this before. THEREFORE, after all the chaos of work and more work, I finally decided that enough is enough and I WILL post more often. At least once a week. I will try.

So I didn't think it was a great idea to take two history classes and a government class together and it turns out it's NOT a good idea at ALL. Basically, the week before spring break involved taking 5 tests, one per day. That was after 3 papers were due the week before that. So I was miserable for a long time. Even Spring Break was riddled with tons of worrying about how I might have potentially failed my korean midterm. Thankfully my Korean Professor is the nicest person on the planet and I got a reasonable grade, much higher than expected.

I am worried about finding an internship because I really haven't started yet because I've been so busy worrying about schoolwork lately. I really should get down to that... If I don't find an internship, I'll probably go to China and learn how to write Chinese...

Speaking of Chinese! I might be the house manager of Chinese House next year!! WOO~! I'm so proud of my roots. Hopefully Reslife will like me enough to hire me. I already have so many ideas and so many plans! I'm so excited for next year!!! I'm feeling a lot better and definitely more optimistic.

Until next time loves,
SQ

There's probably a lot more i have to say than in this one post...

Ha. I wish I can tell you guys all the reasons I went on a two month hiatus. But I can't, because it's complicated and strange. The basic gist of it was I got a horrible grade in one of my classes and found out the day after christmas (which explains why it was my last post) and spent a few months on a long search for who I am. This  anxiety-filled and extremely stressful two months have not been easy. To this day, I still do not know what I want to do in my life. Recently, it's been getting better and I've become slightly less....lifeless? Perhaps I just need a little boost in my morale, and this is just one of those periods where I'll just have to get over it. My friend put it in such a good perspective for me; I've probably been suffering from a sophomore slump because it's major declaration period, but I'll be okay because it's normal to be worried and he went through it too. At least I know I'm not crazy. :)

2009 did not have a great start, but I won't let my insecurities ruin my entire year. I'll go with the flow and see what happens. Just cause I hit a bump or two doesn't mean my life is ruined.

I have ~ 5 tests this week, so I probably should get back to studying. Oh wells...
Happy March! One week until Spring Break <3>
