It's memorial day, but I forgot (HA! How ironic) so the trains and buses are running on a weekend schedule. I took 1 1/2 hours to reach Flushing and made poor Wankyu wait for me for 3o min. Sometimes I forget why I hate to love the NYC subway system. Sure, it gets you to a lot of places, but it's hella inefficient and NEVER on time ESPECIALLY on the weekends/holidays.

But! We had a nice lunch. :)

So we went to a small korean snack restaurant on union street in Flushing. I forgot to look at the name, but I will check the next time I go back there. I have to say, this place makes some amazing kim bap 김밥.

불고기김밥

Filled with spicy beef, egg, carrots, some type of veggies, and sweet and sour pickled daikon radish, the bulgolgi kim bap makes my mouth water every time I think about it. It's made on the spot when you order so it's also really fresh and warm when you get it. It's perfect for on-the-go occasions. On top of that, this restaurant has really good Kimchi fried rice (Kimchi Bokeumbap 김치 복음밥) I didn't order it today, so I will blog about it next time.

Today, I tried the spicy squid and vegetable stir fry, otherwise known as nakji bokkeum 낙지볶음. I was halfway through my meal when I realized I was supposed to take a picture of it before I started. I apologize in advance, but it looked a lot better before I started digging into it.

낙지볶음

This wasn't as good as the kimchi fried rice, mainly because the squid was overcooked and kind of tough to chew, but it was very flavorful nonetheless. Also, this dish has a real kick to it, so it's not for the faint of heart. I'm pretty sure I drank three glasses of water by this point, and I was only halfway done with it...

Then Wankyu and I went to get Taiwanese Ice, which is one of my favorite desserts in the entire world, in the Flushing Mall food court. He got the Strawberry Ice and then got me the special Taiwanese Ice. (Thank you! Best birthday present ever!! :D)

Strawberry Taiwanese Ice
Strawberry Ice Cream, Sweet Condensed Milk, Some sort of strawberry jam topping...

"Special" Taiwanese Ice (Without the peanuts)
Jelly, red bean, green bean, mung bean and sweet condensed milk

Taiwanese Ice is a perfect treat for a really hot day. Also, there's just something about sweet condensed milk that makes it taste AMAZING with shaved ice. I've decided to make this blog permanently into my food blog. If there is one thing I love most in the world, it's food. So this summer, I decided to take advantage of this beautiful city I live in, New York City, and explore.

Today I went to this Israeli restaurant called Hoosmoos Asli near the 6 train Spring Street stop. It's cheap, and very tasty.

Freshly Made Iced Mint Tea
Perfect for the ridiculous heat yesterday. =]

Tyler's Moroccan Hoosmoos and my Jerusalem Mixed Grill Sandwich
Both were spicy and delicious. At first, we were apprehensive about how full we would be from ordering so little. Turns out, both the hoosmoos and pita sandwich were VERY filling. Very good restaurant. The only problem I had was with the plentiful tomatoes I got with my sandwich. Nevertheless, I'd definitely go back. =]

Hoosmoos Asli
100 Kenmare Street
(between Cleveland Pl & Elizabeth St)
New York, NY 10012

Today, I went to meet Johnny, Viv, Lee (T_T SORRY I LUV U), Anya, Sarah, and Cece. For lunch, we had Japanese food! I wasn't particularly hungry so I settled for a grilled tuna onigiri and seaweed onigiri.

Grilled Tuna and Seaweed Onigiri
Not sure why I picked the seaweed onigiri, but the grilled tuna with mayo was delicious!! The packaging was kind of funny, and it took me a while to figure out how to roll the rice in the seaweed sheet because the instructions were in JAPANESE. My wifey helped me, and wa-la! Onigiri! It was very good! Don't know what the address of this place was, but it was on a street close to the NY Public Library. I think the street is called Library Way.

We then went to Alice's Tea Cup, a tea shop that emulated Alice in Wonderland. IT WAS SO CUTE and the scones were SO GOOD!! It's a little bit girly, but that's okay. Everyone can join the tea party! :]

Peach and Flower Tea
Mmm...very fruity. HOORAY!! (this post came late)

First of all, Happy April Fool's Day! Did anyone notice that youtube is upside down? It's pretty funny, I love it.

So lovely Zarek has reminded me that I haven't posted in forever. I guess I'm not really used to posting often because I've never had to do something like this before. THEREFORE, after all the chaos of work and more work, I finally decided that enough is enough and I WILL post more often. At least once a week. I will try.

So I didn't think it was a great idea to take two history classes and a government class together and it turns out it's NOT a good idea at ALL. Basically, the week before spring break involved taking 5 tests, one per day. That was after 3 papers were due the week before that. So I was miserable for a long time. Even Spring Break was riddled with tons of worrying about how I might have potentially failed my korean midterm. Thankfully my Korean Professor is the nicest person on the planet and I got a reasonable grade, much higher than expected.

I am worried about finding an internship because I really haven't started yet because I've been so busy worrying about schoolwork lately. I really should get down to that... If I don't find an internship, I'll probably go to China and learn how to write Chinese...

Speaking of Chinese! I might be the house manager of Chinese House next year!! WOO~! I'm so proud of my roots. Hopefully Reslife will like me enough to hire me. I already have so many ideas and so many plans! I'm so excited for next year!!! I'm feeling a lot better and definitely more optimistic.

Until next time loves,

SQ

Mika - Love Today

There's probably a lot more i have to say than in this one post...

Ha. I wish I can tell you guys all the reasons I went on a two month hiatus. But I can't, because it's complicated and strange. The basic gist of it was I got a horrible grade in one of my classes and found out the day after christmas (which explains why it was my last post) and spent a few months on a long search for who I am. This anxiety-filled and extremely stressful two months have not been easy. To this day, I still do not know what I want to do in my life. Recently, it's been getting better and I've become slightly less....lifeless? Perhaps I just need a little boost in my morale, and this is just one of those periods where I'll just have to get over it. My friend put it in such a good perspective for me; I've probably been suffering from a sophomore slump because it's major declaration period, but I'll be okay because it's normal to be worried and he went through it too. At least I know I'm not crazy. :)

2009 did not have a great start, but I won't let my insecurities ruin my entire year. I'll go with the flow and see what happens. Just cause I hit a bump or two doesn't mean my life is ruined.

I have ~ 5 tests this week, so I probably should get back to studying. Oh wells...

Happy March! I kinda went crazy with laziness after I got out of school. Haha, but now I'm back! And better than ever. :D

First of all, I'd like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas//Happy Holidays!! Although I'm quite possibly the last person on earth who would be religious, I still think special days like today need to be celebrated. It brings family and friends (sometimes even strangers!) closer together and just makes winter so much brighter! I appreciate the world more and it makes me very happy. :) So guys, have yourself a very merry Christmas//holiday!

This semester is finally over. I'm so happy. I was so burnt out in the end, I don't think I can use my brain for a while (or want to :P). I'm not really satisfied though. I definitely could've tried harder but I didn't and it makes me worried. Oh well. All I can tell myself is I'll try harder next semester.

For some reason, I've recently become addicted to Fire Emblem (8) thanks to Anya :P. I never realized strategy games were so much fun! Okay, so I'm pretty bad at it right now because I'm so rash, but I've definitely gotten better recently. I tried playing Fire Emblem 5 but it was way too hard. Ridiculously hard. Roy is so weak and he keeps dying. :*( Oh well.

Sorry for this boring post. I'm really tired right now. I will put up something worth reading later...so for now, Happy Holidays loves!

Fun Stories 1!

Harvard Royalty:

Harvard students who are advocating a return to the founding principles of the university are also trying to get a Hapsburg royal to rule over the student body. Hm, that's so interesting. I find it rude, unflattering, ungentlemanly, and quite unappealing. If you're not going to talk to me, why bother getting my attention? I don't even know these people. They should just focus on their driving and get a life. Besides, the road is no place to flirt. If they really want to, they could go to a bar or strip club or wherever they like to go to do that stuff. It's not only safer, girls there would probably be more responsive. I'm definitely not interested.

So a word of advice. Unless you're really that awesome, try to refrain from honking at random girls in the street.

On the other hand, there's a fruit fly outbreak in my house. People should definitely start cleaning up after themselves. They're disgusting and they're everywhere. Damn it. Life is great! :):)

I had a very relaxing (minus Black Friday) Thanksgiving, which I am SOOO grateful for. I spent a relatively normal time with my parents and their friends. I'm glad things at home are looking quite low-key...but as I've learned the past 19 years and 6 1/2 months of my life, there's always a calm before the storm. ALSO! I've done no homework so far. Man, I'm so awesome. It's an all nighter for me again! :D

One thing I'm bummed out about is the fact that I didn't go to Todai and somehow, EVERYONE disappeared afterwards except a select few. (I'm a retard.) I was waiting in a cafe with Audrey and Hudson on 32nd street and I met Tyler, Zayn, Petra, etc. a short while after everyone left. But it was already too late since apparently everyone at Todai had already left. :( Hopefully I will get to meet everyone during winter break. We can go out and get food or something. <3 Cheap Food!!!

I didn't buy anything for Black Friday. I'm too poor. I want to save money for textbook buying next year. $_$ College makes me realize how important money really is.

Okay loves, I must go do homework now. :x I will perhaps make a more coherent entry on Wednesday. When everything isn't so hectic. ^_^v

I appreciate all the time we spent together playing games and being kids.

Recession Special!

In a time when the holiday season is looming, unemployment levels are rising, budgets are shrinking, and Spamburgers are the new craze... I realized that I haven't noticed the effects of recession until today. It's interesting to see businesses offer crazy deals that would have been unthinkable in times of prosperity. Black Friday isn't even here yet! For example, American Eagle never had huge sales until recently. And when I say huge, I mean really HUGE. Like, 50% off + an additional 25%. Aeropostale is currently offering 50-70% off on all merchandise. That means I can get a sweater for $15 (Retail Price: $39.99). Apple, this Friday, will be having a big Black Friday sale. (Has Apple had sales before?) McDonalds is offering 2 egg sandwiches for $3 and Burger King is offering 2 fish sandwiches for $4. I can get a 500 gig external harddrive for $79.99 (1tb for 169.99 if you really have that much porn to store :P JKJK) and lots lots more. Bargains are everywhere! Now is definitely the time to buy that cardigan sweater or external harddrive I've always wanted but was too cheap to get.

My favorite bargain of the day was when I went to 금강산(KumGangSan). I've been here about 3x before in my life, but I have NEVER seen it offer so many side dishes, large portions, or interesting delicacies before.

Sadly enough, I forgot my camera cable back at school so I will describe some of the jaw-dropping service/complimentary food I received for lunch.

1. There were about 9 side dishes. I distinctly remember getting only 4 back in the day when we weren't so worried about money at KumGangSan. They presented the usual kimchi, potato fruit salad, and other veggies. I thought there was no more, but the food just kept on coming. We also got the dried small fish (anchovies?) that I love so much, an entire mackerel (fish), roasted pumpkin, 1 bowl of delicious soft tofu, and Molokhia tofu. That's more than I've ever seen (side dishes-wise) from an order that did not involve korean barbeque. And might I add that it was all DELICIOUS. Dessert consisted of delicate fruit jellies that made me very very happy.

2. My order of Spicy Cod Fish Roe Casserole was huge. I barely finished 1/5 of it. I know I don't eat that much, but the amount of casserole in my bowl was definitely upped. Interestingly enough, the rice that came with my order wasn't in its usual tin bowl. Instead, it was in a hot stoneware bowl usually used for hot Bi Bim Bap, decorated with chunks of dried fruit and sweet potato on top. I've never seen more appetizing white rice. (lol)

3. Hudson's Bi Bim Bap was very big and delicious. Aha, that sounded dirty. :P But really, there was a lot of food in that bowl of beef, vegetables, and rice.

4. The bill came out to 25.90 total. Hudson looked at it and exclaimed "Haha! Recession Special!"

I totally agree.

SO while you're busy bemoaning the sad sad economy, go out and SHOP SHOP til you drop (or at least get those things you really wanted) because I don't think you'll see bargains like this for a while once the economy is back on track!

Have a great Thanksgiving! :):) Gobble Gobble!

There was a turkey floating in my tub...

I finally published the post prior to this one where I responded to everyone's comments in the 2nd post. His name was Bob (foodnetwork told me the more love you show the turkey, the tastier it would come out). Johnny summed this picture up very well in one sentence. "HAHAHA! IT LOOKS LIKE WE LYNCHED THE TURKEY!!!"

Anyway.

Yesterday we had an awesome thanksgiving party dinner. We ran into only a few mishaps and had to have dinner at like a little before 9 pm. (Mainly, we had to thaw a 14 lb turkey that we got yesterday and shrink the thaw time available from 3 days to 24 hours.) Nevermind the obscene amounts of money we had to pay, but it was actually DELICIOUS. For our first turkey, Bob turned out PERFECT. So perfect that I have to quote my anonymous friend on this: "That actually was the most delicious turkey I ever tasted, no offense to my mom". I think we're all ridiculously proud of ourselves with how the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, brownies, 2 cheesecakes, etc turned out. Out of 589 housing lottery numbers, I got 582. (For this sophomore year. That was pretty fail, I have to admit.)
#2. Econ test had everything I didn't study for.
#3. Government pop quiz on the same day of my econ test...also the ONLY day I didn't do the government reading.
#4. Prereg. I only really got 1 class I wanted out of all 4. All the other classes are full.
#5 and the last thing I will complain about. I didn't get to vote because my absentee ballot got lost in the mail or somewhere in the application process. In any case, I called the absentee ballot a billion times but they never sent it to me. Even though it didn't matter (NY), but I wanted to participate in this historic election.

BUT everything will turn out alright because it always does. I believe in it.

ANYWAY responses to my comments to my last post!

Eric Chan- I know. It snowed many places...just not here. :( Sadness. I can't wait to see you though! Haha also, I don't want to be completely antisocial. I'd just like to have life slow down for a bit. I hear they're raising metrocard prices, so I might be able to save a few dollars if I just stay home. :] Will you really cover for me for Todai? Naw, I feel bad. We should get together and play mah jong though (that I can afford!). Good luck to you too on your work!! Gambatte! We can do it!!!

Anoni- I like you because you're feisty and mysterious. haha :) I also apparently gave you a cute nickname because I'm too lazy to type out anonymous. First of all, I'm not fat but Bob was. Second of all, glad you appreciate all my econ lingo and puns! Third of all, I'm not sure how well you know me, but I HATE the Joy Luck Club. I named this post in honor of you. I think it sucks and doesn't represent Chinese Americans very well. I hated the characters (waverly? seriously?) My literary brain would like to excuse it as "a story unique to Amy Tan and therefore cannot be judged" but we all know that's BS and I'm begging for an A. However, it is indisputably Asian American literature...because it's about Chinese people in America and their experience. Sorry if I offended you by calling it so. We can definitely have a hate date on it if you want! :)

Yida- I definitely maybe want to meet up afterwards or something. I wouldn't know what we'd do though. I know majors don't restrict me to certain jobs, but I can't imagine myself doing anything economically relevant. I don't know. I'm still debating. I think I might actually be more interested in business economics than econ theory (calc repels me), which sucks cause Wesleyan is not very business-y. Maybe I can contact alumni and get an internship! :P I still got 4 months to decide. Isn't it exciting? Speaking of which, what's your major? Are you still in business? I just began economics this year. I seriously feel like a lost soul. lol, I hate going to a liberal arts college. (JK)

David H- HA. Yea right. I'd rather quit school and work at McDonalds.

King- Epically long comment! :) I love you! I hope everything is going well with you know what! ;) I love sincerity so I thank you for that long thoughtful post. I dropped premed last year cause I realized it was a waste of my time since being a doctor is very different from what I thought it to be. At least in this capitalist society. I liked government so I thought it would be great to be a government major. And then I took econ this year and discovered I liked that too! (Fundamentally very interesting.) I love the theories, don't quite like the math. It's tolerable though. I'm doing well in Econ so it's making me hopeful. Aghh I don't know. It's probably not a good idea for me to major in Econ too cause that means I can't study abroad. Or it might be highly unlikely. I'm going to try really hard though. Wow, I think this post isn't making sense anymore, I'm sorry. I'm very conflicted about what I should do. I'm going to see how my Econ class next semester turns out to decide for sure. :) Thanks a lot <3! By the way, what's your major?

I love all the silly moments we had together. JK dudes. I hope you have a wonderful day!

And so the complaining begins...
It's cold. I hate this schizophrenic weather. It was just warm in Middletown around a week ago and pretty cold the week before that. It's hard to figure out what clothes to pack away for good:(. Today, there was forecast for snow, which would have made my misery more tolerable, but there's no snow. Bummer.

Thanksgiving break is coming, which also means tests and papers are coming. Tomorrow is D-Day for Econ. Guess what I'm doing? Stressing!! And procrastinating too (I'm obviously not reading my Econ book). There's too much on my mind right now for me to focus.
*First of all, I have to figure out what I'm doing for winter, spring and summer vacation/break. After a year of spending them working/interning/volunteering away from home, I think it would be awesome if I could just travel somewhere nice or stay at home and have some precious time to myself. I don't know. I still have a little time to figure that out.
*Second of all, I'm having Major trouble. I am declaring soon, and I still have no idea what I really want to do in my life. I'm thinking I like Econ & Government, but what would I do with those majors? I'm pretty sure I'm not built to become a politician or a businesswoman. Whatever happened to my life dream of becoming a doctor? Who am I? What am I? The only thing I'm sure of is that I want to be successful. Then again, what is success? How I can get there? OMG there are so many questions. Someone help me!! Maybe I should try fortune telling or flipping a coin. It always works when I can't decide which restaurant I want to go to.
*Third of all, I have an Econ test and I haven't studied. much. yet.
*Fourth of all, there's Todai & I can't go because my MPC (Marginal Propensity to Consume) is 1. Which basically means I'm broke. I miss you guys very much though. :(
*Fifth " " I miss you. :(

What this all boils down to is that I should listen to Barney Stinson [HIMYM]: When I get sad, I stop being sad and be awesome instead. There's only a few things I regret doing in this world, and taking this class is one of them. What happened to the literature?! Asians?! Americans?! Joy Luck Club?!

List of things to do:
Go to Stop & Shop. After about an hour of messing around with templates, privacy settings, colors, fonts, and whatever else they asked of me, I'm finally ready to start writing in my own blog. With all these fancy features, it sure beats writing in a book. Hooray for technology!

I had debated for a long time whether I should start a blog. Seeing as how #1) I keep losing my journals (keys, number locks and all), and #2) my memory is terrible, I decided this was the best way to keep track of my life and my thoughts. As soon as I started this blog, though, I had already run into a crisis. I think I stared at the screen for about 30 minutes before I finally had any inkling of a title that could summarize me in about 5 words. When I realized that the title "Thoughts and Concerns of an Chinese American College Student Whose Life Goal is to Achieve Happiness, Love, Prosperity, and World Peace by Helping Others" was probably a little too wordy, non-nonsensical, and boring (with a dash of socialism! Gasp, the horror!), I settled for a few words that describe the core loves that I have:

Eating
Rationalizing
Being Asian-American and a sucker for cute things (Yes I think Mochi desserts are cute).
Being completely and utterly random.

What better way than to call this blog "Appetizing Thoughts of a Mochi"! I don't know, it made sense in my head at the time. :) Perhaps I will change the blog name when I feel I have outgrown it much later on. Considering how fickle I can be, I hope I will be able to stick with this new arrangement in my life forever so that one day I can show my children or grandchildren the type of person I am. Am I thinking way too far into the future?

Today I will skip any philosophical thoughts and just end this entry with one thing I appreciate in my life. Maybe it's the bad Northeastern weather, the lack of sunlight, or because I'm feeling the pressure of being a sophomore, but I feel particularly incapable of thinking too much. If I do think, it's usually about something depressing.
